The fashion shows are split into two types of dresses, and this year was no different as more than one unwearable outfit was displayed on the runway.

THE OUTRAGEOUS SIDE OF FASHION

There was the paranormal and horrific sense of humor from Adrian Alicea - at least this designer embraces some real women with real sizes! Jeremy Scott is heavy into long, luxurious faux furs - one yellow hoodie with long sleeves and thigh boots looks like a sexy wookie with the upper thighs peeking out, and another creation involved a super sheer see through with strategic checker underwear and another set of furry thigh boots, this time in black.

Thom Brown came with angular lines of white gauze and red roses - in fact, angular was a theme for him this year in the square plaid hanger rack shirt - the most unwearable design of the lot. Some of the designs are a not so subtle nod the new style sweeping the fashion world, Street Style. Rodarte puts it together with a concentric circled tie die, black pants and a jacket set off by silver sneaks; Betsey Johnson goes street with a vengeance in a pink workout outfit with a black tutu and black edging along the low cut square neckline of the pink shirt.

She has also put out a bright yellow workout look too - street style with a nasty, sizzling twist; this one is wearable, just not at the prom!

THE ONES THAT WILL SEE THE WORLD

Marc Jacobs showed off glittery shorts and a tight knit sweater, reminiscent of the romper look of the Alyce 2147 or the Alyce 2119.

The Alyce 2147 features black sparkle shorts set off with a wide red belt and a translucent long sleeved shirt with strategically placed crawling vines and leaves across the bosom, the neck and climbing down the sleeves.

The Alyce 2119 is a strapless sweetheart neckline romper in sequins; a faux brilliantly dyed floor length overskirt also makes this a versatile outfit - add the overskirt for more formal occasions, take it off for a fancy bar-b-que!

Calvin Kline had some nice, low key pieces that will see wear on the street - the black miniskirt with black hose and sweater ensemble with a nice beret was one of the cutest looks on the walkway, thanks to Ralph Lauren!

Marchesa had a nice evening - classic, strapless with opposing diagonal folds meeting at the hip, with red vines crawling along the left side. This is reminiscent of the Jasz Couture 4895, a floor length, sweetheart neck strapless gown that exposes the left flank in a jeweled cutout - once again, we see the opposing diagonal ruching which gives both of these gowns a classy look.

The Jasz Couture piece clings more tightly to the body, and will make a great prom dress!

Other than a simple shift (which can be a great dress under the right circumstances), the ball gown is the oldest style trend in our history. It goes back so far that it is hard to determine exactly when that thing we consider a ball gown actually happened.

Many of the modern gowns would have fit in at different times in the past, and ball gown styles have always had a strong sense of history, even when they are breaking new ground.

There is nothing like a haute couture affair, a summer gala or a black tie event to show off the dress and look of a lifetime, and if you are going to a party that holds that type of stature you will want to take plenty of time and look at plenty of styles before you decide on the type of dress you will want to wear.

There are many subcategories and forms of the classic ball gown, from off the shoulder to long sleeves and everything in between, and flavored from different cultures like the Jasz Couture 4564 to a classic European look like the Mori Lee 87082, a true princess gown which leaves the shoulders bare. Party season is coming up, and there is always the question - what dress to wear? There are a few things that you can ask yourself to help you decide which dress to get for which event. These questions can be summed up easily - what type of party, how do I look and am I comfortable.

There is no question that is more important than the other two, but just like a stool each question is vitally important. So, when you are considering the party you are shopping for, ask yourself what the party is for - is it a prom, a pageant, a homecoming or a graduation party? Or something much less fancy, like a spring bash at someone's lake house, or a mid-woods bonfire?

OK, if it's a bonfire, the pressures off. No need to buy a dress for that one.

But what about the spring bash? Without asking, how can you tell what the dress code is going to be like? Where it is being help will be an indicator, as well as whether there will be actual food, finger food or chips in a bowl. If you know the venue, the entertainment and the food you can tell a lot about what kind of party it will be. For the proms, balls and soirees the choices will be much more rigid - if it is black tie, a long gown is appropriate, although some tasteful alternatives may be worn, like the Terani 11075C single strap midlength with a short slit. If it is 'formal' that leaves room for almost any nice dress, from a mini to a skirted romper to a long, flowing off the shoulder slit skirt gown.

The nest question is, how do you look? Unlike the models in the pictures, we don't all have the sam type of body, and we won't all look good in every dress. There are about six general body types; straight, pear, hourglass, oval, inverted triangle and diamond.

Straight, hourglass, inverted triangle and diamond (hips and waist are broader than the bust) will fit into the most dresses. For an oval or pear shape, princess dresses and A line dresses are best. These dresses allow the pear and oval shape to show off their best features while blending the others with the cut of the dress.
